Hungarian Grand Prix Qualifying: Zhou Stuns, Russell Eliminated
Lewis Hamilton Edges Out Verstappen for Pole
Qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix produced a surprise result on Saturday, with Alfa Romeo's Guanyu Zhou securing a shock pole position. The Chinese driver delivered a stunning lap to beat seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton by a mere 0.028 seconds. Zhou's teammate, Valtteri Bottas, also impressed, qualifying in third place.
The biggest shock of the day came from Mercedes' George Russell, who was eliminated in Q2 after failing to set a competitive time. Russell, who has been in impressive form this season, struggled with his car's handling and was unable to make it into the top 10.
Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who started the day as the favorite, could only manage fourth place, while Ferrari's Charles Leclerc qualified in fifth. Fernando Alonso continued his strong run of form for Aston Martin, qualifying in sixth place ahead of McLaren's Lando Norris.
Hamilton's First Pole Since Abu Dhabi
Hamilton's pole position is his first since the penultimate race of the 2021 season in Abu Dhabi. The Mercedes driver has struggled for pace this season, but he showed signs of improvement in Hungary.
Hamilton will be looking to convert his pole position into a race win on Sunday. However, he will face a tough challenge from Zhou and his Alfa Romeo teammates.
